As Messi waits on a new deal, Ronaldo claims Barcelona dabble in 'dark arts'

Ronaldo has accused Barcelona of using “dark arts in their negotiations”, with broken promises leading to him leaving the club back in 1997.

The Brazilian had enjoyed a memorable debut campaign at Camp Nou, in which he scored 47 goals across all competitions, but was sold to Inter Milan after just 12 months.

A man who would go on to become a World Cup winner and World Player of the Year insists that he never intended to leave Barca.

‘Messi the only indispensable player’

He was prepared to stay, with an agreement in place, but saw club officials go back on their word and sanction a sale to the highest bidder.

With the La Liga giants currently embroiled in a contract saga involving talismanic forward Lionel Messi, Ronaldo has revealed that all may not be as it seems.

He told Resenha on ESPN: “The experience [in Barcelona] was wonderful, but it was not possible to continue although that was not my fault.

Lionel Messi Neymar Barcelona

“I had reached an agreement to renew my contract just a month before that season was over.

“But a week later, Barcelona’s lawyer and president agreed that the contract was absurd, so they would accept the offer of any club that would pay my 29 million euro release clause.”

‘Special Messi is one of the greats’

He added: “In Barcelona, even today, the club demonstrates these dark arts in their negotiations.

“They act in a different way, for instance with the ‘Neymar case’. I believe we still do not know what happened.

“There are many serious issues and someone is going to pay dearly for them.”
